Medinat al-Zahara, the magnificent and mysterious city that Abd-al Rahman III ordered to be constructed at the foot of "Sierra Morena", at 8 kilometers off the capital of the city, holds, even in its name, legendary stories. The popular tradition affirms that, when Abd al-Rahman III proclaimed himself Caliph in 929 a.c., and after reigning for eight years, he decided to construct a palatine city in honour to his favourite, Azahara. Nevertheless, recent studies offer strong evidences of the reason that persuaded the Caliph to found Medina Azahara. A renovated image of the newly created Caliphate independent of the West, strong and powerful and one of the biggest medieval kingdoms of Europe, seems to be the most probable reason for its origin.
On 1 July 2018, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee included the Medina Azahara Caliphate on the list of cultural sites protected in a debate in which there were no objections.
